Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the extent to which the use of renewable energy influences job creation in the tourism sector in South Sulawesi Province, focusing on two main dimensions: the number of workers and the proportion of green jobs at the business unit level. The study employs a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory sequential design, in which the quantitative phase is conducted first through a survey of formal tourism businesses (accommodation, food and beverage, tourism services, and destination managers), followed by a qualitative phase involving in-depth interviews with business managers, policymakers, and relevant stakeholders. The dependent variables consist of the number of workers and the proportion of green jobs, while the main independent variable is a composite index of renewable energy utilization, which includes the presence of renewable energy installations, the proportion of energy needs met by renewable sources, energy efficiency practices, and the possession of green certifications, with business scale, destination typology, and business tenure serving as control variables. The analysis results show that the use of renewable energy has a positive and significant impact on increasing the labor force, while also having a stronger influence on increasing the proportion of green jobs; thus, renewable energy plays a role not only in expanding employment opportunities but also in transforming the job structure toward a greener and more sustainable profile. Furthermore, business scale, destination characteristics (particularly urban and natural destinations), and business maturity were found to enhance a business unit’s ability to convert the use of renewable energy into employment opportunities.
